Green-Thumb Challenged                       by Pastor Becky Lembke

Unfortunately, I am green-thumb challenged; plants do not tend to thrive in my care.  My husband gave me a plant that is supposed to grow from a single bulb into a tall, flowering plant.  According to the instructions, I should give the bulb a good soaking and then water it weekly.

I watered and watched the plant for over a month, but found no signs of life.  “This thing is dead!” I exclaimed.  But I was wrong; the plant was trying desperately to bloom where it was planted.  Yesterday I noticed that the brown straw sprouts had begun to turn green and had a shoot growing underneath the soil pushing the bulb up and out.  The bulb had been planted upside down!  I replanted it.

The plant already has grown nearly two inches.

There are spiritual parallels to my experience with the bulb.  We make little headway in spiritual growth until we look to God for direction.  When we open ourselves to God’s direction through prayer, scripture study, and participation in the faith community, we will begin to grow toward instead of away from God.

I share this story with you for a couple of reasons.  One reason is to invite you to join with us as we seek to grow in the direction God wants us to grow.  There are small groups meeting now that are dedicated to meeting people where they are on their spiritual journey, and encouraging them as they grow (see our Search Parties).

The second reason is that, although I am green-thumb challenged, I didn’t write that devotion.  Elaine Ingolls Hogg did.  I found it on our website at www.JourneyUMC.com.  Did you know that we have daily devotions on our website?  And during the month of August, we will be doing some upgrading.  Along with up to date news about Journey Church, you will also soon be able to find:

·          Interactive activities for children

·          Informative Parenting Links

·          Relevant Daily Devotions

·          Answers to questions about what a United Methodist believes

Our hope is to make our website a lively, learning tool.
